Women in Disasters Study Reports
These five publications present the findings and the recommendations of the Survey of Women’s Human Rights Violations in the aftermath of the December 26, 2004 tsunami in India, Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka and the October 8, 2005 Earthquake in Pakistan coordinated by APWLD. In total over 1,500 people, from 60 to over 900 disaster affected people, mainly women, were covered by the survey in each of the five countries between September 2005 and April 2006. The survey documented facts of discrimination against Dalit communities, forced recanalisation and ‘tsunami’ marriages in Tamil Nadu, India; obstruction of aid and denial of relief and reconstruction assistance to communities allegedly related to GAM rebel fighters in Aceh Indonesia; discrimination against Burmese migrants, “sea gypsies” and sex workers in Thailand; and plight of widows in Sri Lanka and Pakistan among many other violations of women’s human rights in the aftermath of disasters.

Release of the UN Secretary General’s Study on Violence Against Women:
The UN Secretary General released a 140 page report entitled “In-depth study on all forms of violence against women,” at the 61st Session of the General Assembly this year which was the culmination of a collaborative multi-disciplinary study undertaken by the Division on Advancement of Women under the mandate of the Secretary General. APWLD was a member of the Task Force established by the Division for the Advancement of Women on the Study and contributed papers and information on VAW in Asia Pacific to the study. The report classifies abuse against women – whether it happens in the home or elsewhere – as a human rights violation and includes recommendations for action at the national and international level to address violence against women. The report can be accessed at http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/vaw/violenceagainstwomenstudydoc.pdf |
