STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE WOMEN OF SUDAN FROM THE WOMEN OF ASIA PACIFIC,
LATIN AMERICA and AFRICA
As women human rights defenders from the Asia Pacific, from Africa and from Latin America and the Caribbean, we express our solidarity with the women of Sudan as they confront a range of political, social and economic crises.
As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our networks Asia Pacific Women Law and Development (APWLD), Women in Development Africa (WiLDAF) and Latin American and Caribbean Network for Women and Development (CLADEM), we are gravely concerned by the realization that Sudan is the only remaining African nation that has not ratified the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
We urge the government of Sudan to take immediate steps to ratify the Convention and to reaffirm their commitment to the implementation of CEDAW and to the elimination of discrimination against women.
We also call on the government of Sudan to guarantee the safety and security of Sudanese women, in particular, women from the conflict-affected areas of Sudan including Darfur.
