Bangladesh: Free Moshrefa Mishu

Moshrefa Mishu, President of the Garment Workers Unity Forum (GWUF),
a trade union of the ready-made garment sector, was illegally arrested on 14 December 2010.
The arrest occurred after mass protests of garment workers demanding the implementation of the
increased minimum wage. While there was no warrant at the time of her arrest,
Mishu is now facing three fabricated criminal charges. She has been ill-treated and
threatened with death while in detention, and the police did not allow her to take necessary
medicines with her.

The Right to Unite: A Handbook on Domestic Worker Rights across Asia
A New Advocacy Tool for Domestic Worker Rights
“The Right to Unite: A Handbook on Domestic Worker Rights across Asia”,
will be available for the first time during the IAMR3.
This new resource tool is both an introduction to women and domestic work in Asia and an in depth
look at the hidden violations of domestic worker rights in ten countries in the region.
Designed for advocacy, this handbook breaks down information country by country.
It contains the latest ILO instruments on domestic work and analyses them in relation
to women domestic worker rights. It identifies gaps, highlights concerns and gives concrete recommendations for change.
It has been made possible by the collaborative efforts of the United for Foreign Domestic Workers’ Rights coalition.
It is an example of how collective voices can amplify our social movements. This belief in collective strength is what
is behind this new tool to promote the right to unite; the right to organise; the right to stand together and demand rights
for all workers regardless of sector, gender or nationality. Read more here
The guidebook also includes the
UFDWR submission to the international labour organisation for amendment to the proposed convention and recommendation on domestic work.
UFDWR is calling for individual and organisational endorsements for this submission, please click the link below to include your endorsement before the 17th Nov.

Pakistan: Urgent Appeal
Pakistan is facing yet another emergency situation due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall which, according to UN reports, has directly affected fourteen million people so far. Shirkat Gah - Women’s Resource Centre (SG), Pakistan, is actively engaged in providing and coordinating relief to those affected across Pakistan through its partner community based organizations in synchronization with all three Shirkat Gah offices in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar.
We would like to appeal to all to help Shirkat Gah in raising funds. Your contribution will be highly appreciated and will be used to set up medical camps and purchase goods necessary for immediate relief such as food items, medicines, cooking utensils, clothing and shoes (the latter two items can also be donated to Shirkat Gah Offices). The funds will later be used for the particular needs of communities based on a reassessment of the situation
For complete details, please visit this Shirkat Gah link. |
